Displaying Folders

Is there a way to change the default way that Windows XP displays folders?
I almost always want them to display using Details. But it seems Windows
wants to use Icons. I have set Folder Options to "remember" the folder
settings after changing them to Details, but this does not always seem to
"stick." Frequently (I have not taken a survey) the next time I go tothe
folder where a file is stored, everything displays again as Icons even
though I am pretty sure I had reset it the last time I was accessing that
folder. If I create a new folder, it always displays as Icons instead of
Details. FWIW, I seem to have the same problem in Windows Server 2003 using
Terminal Server, so I am not sure the problem is specific to WinXP. thanks
for your help!

I'm assuming that when you set your folder options you went to the view tab
and pressed "Apply to all folders"?

I prefer Details too. I set this up a little differently than what you've
described. I set a folder to Details. While that folder is still open, I
use Folder Options to "apply to all folders." Result: all folders are
displayed in Details view. From there, I check the "remember each window"
box and customize other folders as I use them.

Also apply this fix (line 2 on left hand side) to increase the number of
folders that Windows can retain settings/views for:
