When I run my mouse over the clock in the system tray the current date
is displayed but how may I have the the day of the week displayed also

What version of Windows are you using? Do you have any regional settings in
place? Try making your taskbar one notch higher, and see if this repairs
it. You can unlock the taskbar by right clicking on it and choosing unlock,
you can then drag the top of it higher.

I have Win XP Home ed. and I dont want to have the date permanently
displaying, I just want the settings as it is but with the day of the
week (Mon, tues, wed etc) being displayed aswell as the date when the
cursor is run over the clock in the system tray.

TTBOMK, that's not possible.

In Control Panel, go to Regional and Language options/Customise..
'Date' tab / Long Date Format
In the drop-down menu, change from (d MMMM yyyy) to (dddd, d MMMM yyyy)
Apply.

This is quite easy:
1. Open Regional/Language Control Panel
2. Click on Customize button
3. Click on Date tab
4. For Long Date Format type: ddd dd MMMM yyyy
e.g. Wed 31 March 2004
5. Click OK to set new format.
