Hello, LadyBlue.
It sounds like the entire desktop is stretched beyond your viewing area, and
you'd likely see this with other applications. If you like the current
resolution and color depth, try to resize your viewing area by using the
manual controls on your CRT or LCD monitor. There will probably be a menu
button visible. In here, you should be able to reduce the horizontal and or
vertical sizes. The monitor manual will likely be available on the
manufacturer's website.
