My computer is now showing two black bars one at the top and one at the
bottom, like you see in widescreen movies. How can I get this off and back to
a full screen?

It's probably your refresh rate try adjusting that if you want to go back to the other resolution.
 
I think the problem was a widescreen resolution chosen for a non-widescreen
monitor.
