After an automatic windows update, my computer restarted and everything on
the monitor has shrunk down in size including the toolbar, sidebar, mouse,
internet explorer and everthing else. I have a Dell 22" widescreen LCD with
resolution set at 1680 by 1050 which I believe is the correct resolution. Any
recommendations to return everything back to its normal size?
Thanks

Right click anywhere on the desktop . Personalize > Display settings >
adjust 'til your heart's content.

The same thing happened to me today. I was able to bring everything back to
size manually with the exception of the sidebar and its icons. According to
Microsoft, you cannot adjust the size of the sidebar or its icons, it is
preset. My PC is under Dell warranty but they had no clue with online
support so they are now contacting Mr. Gates finest. Something tells me this
happened to thousands of us and we are just finding out now about the snafu.
Now my calendar is too small to read-even on a 22" Samsung! Yikes~! I hope
Microsoft is quick to restore this consumers confidence.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ALSO EVERYTHING IS SMALL AND HARD TO READ I HAVE A
NEW DELL ALSO WITH A 19IN LCD,WAS TROUBLE SHOOTING WITH AOL ALL MORNING AND
THEY CAME UP WITH NOTHING ALSO,THEY SAID TO CONTACT A WINDOWS TECH,I HOPE
THEY GET THIS STRAIGHTEND OUT FAST,VERY HARD ON THE EYES

Looks like there was an update for a driver and MS didn't preserve your
settings for it and set it to it's shipping default value.
Right click anywhere on the desktop . Personalize > Display settings >
and re-adjust.

I am aware that the resolution can be adjusted as described but none of the
settings look as good as my previous display. I went ahead and ran a system
restore which has set the display back normal

the exact same thing happened to me this afternoon london time. the web
browser pages dont fit the whole screen, the side bar is too small to read,
etc the other things have shrunk in size..... i also have a dell 20"
widescreen lcd with resolution 1680 by 1050... looks like more than one
person has been affected by this... i have been fretting over it all day... i
tried personalizing the display settings... nothing works......... help
please??????

Same thing here. Also happened today. Mine is a 6 month old Dell 20" flat
screen. Must have been a really bad update.

I'd check Dell's site for an updated video driver.
Did you happen to get a Windows Update for your video driver, or perhaps an
update that reset your display resolution?

Not sure what the update was, it was an automatic update that came through
while the computer was in sleep mode.

I am not a high tech user so kinda lost here, but would it do any good to
"restore" everthing? The last save was the day before this issue happened?

Mine did the same thing did you ever get a resolution to the problem Its
been since yesterday and like you mine was in sleep mode when it happened
after that it hasnt been the same.i tried to reset to defaults this still
does not work also after rebooting a few too many times i lost some things so
be careful Good luck im still tinkering with it....Vista duo core Acer 320GB
is what im operating and home edition 07

Yep, the same thing happened to us yesterday, too. I have seen someone say
that even though they managed to get it back to normal by doing a system
restore (which I wouldn't know how to do anyway!) but that next time their
computer booted the update was installed again so everything went teeny again.

Does anyone know if Microsoft are dealing with this? At the moment I have
increased font sizes for the internet but it all looks terrible!

restoring does nothing, the problems still occur..... i hope that microsoft r
doing something about this, as it looks like more than a couple of people r
having this problem... microsoft fix thisssssss

Boot into Safe Mode - Devive Manager - Delete the Display Adapter

Reboot - tell it to look for and install new driver EVEN if its the same
one.

Then reset your display settings.

Any word on a permanent fix for this yet?? Where is the best place to
contact about the problem?

I would've thought Microsoft were the people to contact - the problem is they
seem to charge you for the support unless you're a new customer :-s.

It's been a week no and still no sign of a fix...

Ok here goes a TEMPORARY fix. My Dell support staff are contacting Microsoft
to fix this issue on my behalf-I hope~! My desktop shrunk after a Windows
Vista auto update on 3-02-08. I put up with this for over a week and several
online chat sessions with Dell customer support (I have a Spanking new Dell
desktop W/ Samsung 22" Mon.)
This is what worked for me-WARNING-kindly attempt this at your own risk.
Shut your computer down completely.
Hit the power button (to power up) and start tapping F8.
When the restore desktop option appears choose it.
Follow the next few prompts with administrative passwords etc.
Choose a system restore point or date before the update infected your system.
Warning, it is possible you could lose info subsiquent to update.
I have done this several times and have lost no information.
When you select the restore date (pre vista SHRINK Update) follow
instructions.
It takes some time depending on the speed and info on your system.
If all goes well the system will restart and BAM your good old BIG screen
will restore
Now the important part: Go into your Windows Update screen and select
settings.
(you can get here by typing it into the Help task bar)
You will see options for Windows Update settings.
Turning your update off wont work-it will disable anti virus software-I
tried it . . .
What you can do is change the day and time of the next scheduled update.
Choose the furthest point in the week from your current date.
Now dont forget to write it down because you will need to adjust this date
every week (pre update) until Microsoft comes up with a fix. I know its a
pain but two minutes every week to change a date for the update or tiny
unreadable icons-you choose. I will post the real fix when Dell (if Dell)
gets back to me. Good luck~!
P.S. You think if Microsoft knows about this (they do) they would stop
sending this currupted update to all of us???!!!!AAAAAHHHHhhhhh . . .
