After a recent computer crash I reinstalled windows 2000
But the monitor display is set for 16 colors and I am
unable to change it to 256 or anything else for that
matter. 16 is the only option available to me when I go
to display set up. Any ideas?

It sounds like your video card's drivers are not behaving correctly (or are
no longer installed).

Right-click My Computer and go to Manage and then to Device Manager.

Under Display Adaptors, you should see your graphics card driver. If it has
a red cross or a yellow exclamation mark, then that's a fair sign that
something's up.

You could try reinstalling your graphics card driver, or you may find the
error message in the device status to be enlightening.

Also, for your information, this newsgroup is dedicated to the discussion of
setup/deployment issues (i.e. deploying Windows 2000 on large networks).
Some better groups for this question might be:

Download and install the Win2K-specific video drivers from your
video adapter manufacturer's web site.
