Hi:

I have a Toshiba L455-S7980 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. Also
installed is Microsoft Office 2007 Full Pro version.

When I open certain files i.e. all ,pps files have a black border approx 2
in on each side and do not fully fill the display screen. I can see the
full view of the file, but it appears boxed in due to these black borders.
This also happens with some .wmv files and YouTube files as well.

I have changing various display settings, but have not been successful in
removing these black borders.

I also have another Toshiba laptop running XP SP3 Home Edition and do not
have this problem viewing referenced files.

Any help in this matter will be appreciated.

Thanks,

ColTom2

Hi:

I have only had this laptop for a few weeks so I haven't had time to
really get checked out.

I just also noticed that both IE8 and FF 3.5 have a border applicable
displayed Homepage Comcast.net. This border, while not black in color, is
bluish in color and a distinct border that is not allowing the webpage tobe
fully displayed.

Thanks,

ColTom2

These are the affect of having a display that has an aspect ratio of
other than 4:3 - probably closer to 16:9, which seems to be the 'new'
standard. PowerPoint is generally defaulted to a 4:3 aspect ratio
(10" by 7.5" in the US). You can either adjust the slide size in PP
or check the advanced display properties of your machine to see if
there is a 'stretch' option that will fill the screen, regardless of
the aspect ratio being output by the application. Know that this will
distort the display somewhat. The horizontal and vertical pixels per
inch will no longer be identical, if you use the stretch option.

If you're also connecting to a projector, you may want to use the
stretch option on your laptop, as many projectors still use the 4:3
aspect ratio (1024 by 768 pixels) (or live with the black spaces).
Though newer ones that support the Hi-def 1080p are 16:9 aspect
machines, I think.

Generally, you'll either need to play with the display settings to get
a 'full screen' or live with some empty display spaces.

Hi Tom:

I have checked everything in Advanced Display Settings and find nothing
that would allow me the "stretch" option.

Also I am unfamiliar with PP 2007 and could not find the option to change
the slide size.

If you, or anyone, could tell me how to access this option with PP 2007 I
sure would appreciate it. I would at least like to see if the distortion
would be acceptable.

Thanks,

Hi Steve:

Maybe I doing something wrong, but I never could get the PP Design tab,
Page Setup to work. It changed it for Presentation 1 only as if I was making
a PP slide. When I go to the .pps file and click on it I always get the same
view, as the changed settings do not apply for viewing it.

How can I change the settings to apply to a .pps file in a Documents
folder?

Check your computer's manual; often these settings are available via special
function key tricks.

Don't doubleclick the PPS to start it. Instead, start PowerPoint, then use
File, Open to open the PPS.

While in PowerPoint, open the "Design" tab in the ribbon. Open "Page Setup"
and change the "Slides Sized For" option. Chose your size and accept the
changes.
