I am producing a report that covers survey results from nine major
European countries. I would like to display the results on a bar
chart where the bar displays the colours of the national flag on the
countries.

Does anyone know if this is possible? If not, does anyone one know of
an add-in or something that could help me make my charts look good?

Thanks

Hello Alison,

If you click on a given bar of your Diagram, so to select it exclusively
(apart from the other bars), you can replace the original bar / column by a
picture of your choice of the sam dimension, choosed from the Menue Insert
/ graphic./from file....
In your case : the national flag of the different countries
So the first step will be to create a file from which excel will take the
corresponding clipart for the given purpose. This should not be too
difficult to find through surfing a little bit through the web.

Now change selectively the aspect of the bar representing each of these nine
countries

Supplementing Jean Ruch's comments...

I find it easier to just use copy+paste to add images to a chart
(rather than importing a graphic through the Format Data Point dialog
box). Put all the images of the flags in your XL worksheet (with
Insert | Picture > Clip Art... or Insert | Picture > From File...).

Select and copy the first image of interest. Select the chart, click
on the plotted series. This will select all the columns. Pause and
click on the column that corresponds to the copied object. This will
select just the one column. Paste the copied picture with CTRL+v.

Optionally, experiment with how the flag is shown within the bar.
Double-click the bar (just the one bar, not the entire series), and
from the Patterns tab click the Fill Effects... button. In the Fill
Effects dialog box, in the Picture tab, towards the left bottom are
options for Stretch / Stack / Stack and scale to X units/picture.

Repeat for all nine countries.

Hello Alison,

Reading your posting again:
something that could help me make my charts look good?
I feel rather sceptical
Taking in account the different possible structures of the flags (take in
this respect the flags of France / Germany / UK / Portugal ), I'm rather
convinced that my first proposal was not necessarely the best way.
May be it is sufficient ( better ? ) to print a small flag in the
respective columns / bars on a uniform background color or/and paste it
instead of the category names ?
I'm afraid in my first proposition, the resulting deformations will be too
disturbing
It's to your free appreciation...

kind regards

Jean

Thanks for all your suggestions. I am trying the various options at
the moment to see which one copes best with distortion - Spain is
particulary bad.

kind regards,

Alison
