I noticed my screen saver quit working so I went to
control panel to access the display settings....when I
click the display icon nothing comes up. What up?

Hi Darrell,

It may be that the desk.cpl file is missing or corrupted. You can extract a
fresh copy from the XP install CD. Boot to the Recovery Console and extract
the file to the C:\Windows\System32 folder by keying in this command:

expand <CDROM drive letter>:\i386\desk.cp_ C:\Windows\System32
<ENTER>

For example, if your CDROM drive letter designation is D, the command would
look like this:
expand D:\i386\desk.cp_ C:\Windows\System32
<ENTER>

If you're not familiar with using the Recovery Console, a description of it,
including how to start it and use it, is here:

Patti,
Thanks for the quick response...but, it didn't work. I
also tried restore to several points in the last week that
I know the screen saver was working and still no luck I
can't access the display properties. Yesterday I
downloaded a manual update to TurboTax and installed it.
Maybe that update messed sonmething up?
Darrell

It could be that the update messed something up, but then I would think that
doing the System Restore to a point that preceded installing the update
would have then produced desirable results.

You could give this a try and see if it helps:
Go to Start>Run and key in SFC /SCANNOW <ENTER>
have your install CD ready to put in the drive when requested.
