When I right click on the desktop to show display
properties all I get is 1 box that says "display
properties". gone are the 5 or so tabs that are usually
there-how do I fix this? can't change screen saver , the
advanced tab is gone-etc. Only the "display properties"
tab shows as 1 box

I guess you didn't understand-what I have now is like I used your program to disable all tabs except display properties. That is the only one that comes up when you right click the desktop-so your program is nice-but it does exactly the opposite of what I want to do. Any ideas on how to get the tabs back?

Doug,
Tried that and it still only shows display properties-no screen saver, etc. I tried copying desk.cpl off the install cd but that looks the same-are there other files for this action? like for the screensaver, advanced, themes?

No, there are no other files, the tabs are hidden due to a restriction.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to each of the keys indicated below, and in these keys, locate the values indicated. Double click each of the values and set it to 0 (zero).

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

NoDispCPL
NoDispSettingsPage
NoDispBackgroundPage
NoDispAppearancePage
NoDispScrSavPage

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

NoThemesTab

Or see www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 128, Right column, Restore Desktop and ScreenSaver tabs. This REG file will change these settings for you automatically.

Are you sure you haven't used another tweaking program to put this type of restriction in place?

Doug,
That didn't help. I tried all of Kellys tips and checked the registry according to your above post and values were all already 0's. I don't get it-I expanded the desk.cpl file and it shows just the display properties like the one already there when right click on the desktop. How could it be a bad file on the XP cd? Does your desk.cpl file have all the tabs? or just the display properties? if it has them all where could I get a copy of that file? if you have the correct file or any other suggestions I would be forever in your debt. This all happened after I had to reinstall XP after having to reformat my drive. The install seemed to go perfect so I don't get.

Bruce,

You can get a clean copy of the DESK.CPL file from the XP CD. Insert the CD in your drive and then open a Command Prompt Window. Enter the following command:

EXPAND -R X:\I386\DESK.CP_ C:\Windows\System32

Where X is your CD-Rom drive and this assumes that XP is installed in C:\Windows

There should also be a backup copy of DESK.CPL in the Windows\System32\dllcache folder.

That still didn't do it. I am getting a grip on whats wrong but still not there. I applied the fix from Kelly "restorealldisplaytabs" and found that upon checking the reegistry-part of fix didn't go in the registry. Here is what didn't get copied to the registry
"DllName"=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00, 74,00,25,00,5c,00,72,00,65,00,73,00,6f,00,75,00,72,00,63,00,65,00,73,00,5c, 00,54,00,68,00,65,00,6d,00,65,00,73,00,5c,00,6c,00,75,00,6e,00,61,00,5c,00, 6c,00,75,00,6e,00,61,00,2e,00,6d,00,73,00,73,00,74,00,79,00,6c,00,65,00,73, 00,00,0
I also noticed that the individual fixes for the tabs are a bit different but here is something interesting-when I start the 'puter in safe mode-all the tabs are there when you right click on properties. I am using a Nvidea Geforce 2 MX 400 video card and that is giving me lots of problems. It has a desk manager function that I think is responsible for this problem. What I think is happening is when the Nvidea card starts-it calls up the file for the display properties without the tabs. How do I fix this? The only way I can get the card to work is by uninstalling the adapter and then letting windos find and reinstall it. If I use the cd or the latest driver-device manager says it can't load driver
