How can I remove items from the background list in Display
Properties/Desktop. There is no info on this in XP documentation under
"background and themes". I know this should be simple but there is no
"delete" option on the page anywhere. Thanks for any help.

Display Properties/Desktop/Background and choose (None), which is the first
choice in the list.
 
Thanks, but it's not a matter of choosing no desktop background, I actually
want to delete some of the choices in the background list. (A bunch of photos
from "my pictures" somehow ended up there and I want to remove them. They
clutter up the list of choices.)
 
They are in C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper. You can delete them there I should
think. You might want to move them to a folder somewhere else if you just
want to shorten the list in Properties.

The list is pulled from several locations: your Windows folder,
\windows\web\wallpaper\, ..\My Pictures\Sample Pictures and the main folder
for your account's My Pictures.

Open Windows Explorer to those folders and delete the wallpapers that you
don't want.

Did you ever get this problem resolved? I have exactly the same question.
I went to the directories suggested by 2 other folks who sent their replies
to you, but I couldn't find the list of images/photos in my
DisplayProperties/Desktop/Background list in those directories. I know that
they are in My Pictures directory but I don't want to delete them there
because they will be gone forever.

Windows XP fetches the image files from the following paths:

BMP Files from %Systemroot% (Windows folder)

BMP, JPG, GIF, JPE, DIB, PNG, HTM files from the following locations:
%Systemroot%\Web\Wallpaper
%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Pictures
%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
%Programfiles%\Plus!\Themes

If you want to clear a file from that list, move the file away from the
above locations. Type each of the above paths in RUN dialog.
