Display Properties Problem XP Pro

I'm running a fresh install of windows xp pro, and whenever i either right-click / display properties or go to control panel / display, nothing happens. The mouse pointer changes to an hourglass for a few seconds, then nothing. I'd like to be able to adjust my display settings. Please help!
