display Power Management Signaling (DPMS)

When I turn on the computer, a message comes up on the
monitor stating "DPMS---GOING TO OFF MODE" and then the
monitor goes black denying access to my CPU. I tried
pushing the monitor setting buttons and nothing happens. I
tried another non-energy efficient monitor and it stays
lit but nothing else happens. I have tried both monitors
on my old computer and they work fine.

I have tried boot disks, OS CD and searched the web. I
would greatly appreciate any help anyone may have to offer
in resolving my problem.

I have a Compaq Presario 4550 CPU and I'm running Windows
98 Second addition.
