display number of cells resulting from auto filter

I have seen the results of auto filter displayed in the
status bar. I want to "count" the number of cells that
meet the criteria I enter without having to physically
count each line. Where do I turn this feature on? Thanks.

You can use the COUNTIF function.

Barbars, right-click anywhere along the Status Bar and select Count from the
popup menu.

....and note that the count will display only when you select the cells to be
counted.

I have done that but how do I get the results to display
and do I have a choice of where they are displayed? Thanks.

You can use a formula

=SUBTOTAL(2,Full_Column_Range)

will count numeric filtered values

=SUBTOTAL(3,Full_Column_Range)

will count all non empty filtered values
