Display Name in Users and Computers

For some reason user names are not displaying correctly in Users and
Computers. Instead of the display name, I see the user id. This was
originally an NT 4 domain that got upgraded in-place. Even though a display
name is specified in the user properties it does not show up in the MMC.
What's going on here? How can I get the display name to show up properly?

Havbe you applied Service Pack 4 yet? It might fix the problem.

After looking at an exported .ldf file of the users, it looks like ADUC is
displaying the "name" field rather than the "DisplayName" field. How can I
change this?
