Fred

I am hoping someone can help to resolve this problem.
Each time I open a folder or a drive the contents of the
window also have the explorer folder list displayed on the
left hand side of the window. If I click on the x it will
close it, I have tried resetting the folders, but no luck,
it is getting to be very annoying. I have searched
through what I think to be every setting that might have
this feature turned on but I can not find it.
Can some one please help to resolve.
Thanks
Fred

Fred,

Open Registry Editor and navigate to this key:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell]
In the right-pane, set the default value to "open" without quotes.

Always backup the registry before editing/deleting a key or value. See:
How to backup the Windows XP Registry?:

Close the left pane, then go to Tools, Folder Options, View and click Apply to All Folders. Then use File, Close to close the Explorer window. The setting should be retained.
