Display Driver upgrade in Win-XP

I recently upgraded my OS from Win-Me to Win-XP(Home). I
am unable to configure my monitor above 600x800.
Whenever I try any of the 1024x768 selections, my monitor
shuts off and stays off. I am then forced to reboot
blindly (without the display), and then restart with F8-
Last Know Good Configuration in order to back out the
change.

I have an older Gateway EV700 monitor that did not come
with my current processor. I have a feeling that this is
a driver problem. My current display driver
is "6/6/2001 - 5.1.2001.0". I have been unable to find a
more current driver on either the Gateway or Microsoft
sites.

Any suggestions?

That's a bit like the problem I am having. I have
Windows XP Home Edition. After I downloaded the latest
Microsoft Service Pack, and DirectX9, my monitor does the
same thing. I have a NVIDIA MX 400 video card. The
latest drivers did not help, in fact, made it worse
(screen freezes). I am currently running in VGA mode. (I
uninstalled my NVIDIA drivers). If I try a normal startup
with the NVIDIA drivers loaded, my monitor does the same
thing. (shuts off). I am able to use my computer, but
can't play any of my 3D games.
Do you have ActiveX9? Just wondering if there is any
connection.

If you did an up graded from Windows Me to XP, instead of
a fresh XP install, that could be the problem. I have
noticed upgrading from ME or 98 to XP have cause a lot of
conflicts including display problems. Try formatting you
hard drive and then install XP. This is my suggestion...

Try setting the color depth to 16bps or 256 and see if that helps.
