I've been having a reoccurring problem with my toshiba laptop installed with
windows vista ultimate. At unexpected times, the display will blank out, but
the computer will still be on. The only way to bring back windows is if i
restart the computer since no buttons are responsive. I had a technical
support person on campus (college) reinstall a display driver in safe mode
and it has been occurring less. however, it still happens maybe once every
few days. Any ideas? I don't want to have to ship my laptop to toshiba and
wait 3 weeks for it.

Hi,
I don't want to have to ship my laptop to toshiba and
wait 3 weeks for it.

You may have to if it's a hardware issue. These tend not to get better but
worse. From what you describe, it sounds like there may be a loose
connection or one that failing due to stress - possibly heat.

I have a similar problem, though not exactly the same. I upgraded from
Windows XP pro to Vista Premium. Whenever I boot up, my screen will turn a
greenish color with diagonal lines through it. If I hit the sleep button,
the computer reawakens with a proper picture in a few seconds. The same
thing happens very occasionally when I go to a new web site in IE. I have
had this happen when an active program is running a task, and that task seems
to continue running normally. e.g. If a streaming video is running, I can
still hear the audio. This leads me to believe that windows is still running
normally. I just can't see the desktop. I have the latest available drivers
for my LCD, a Samsung Syncmaster 172n, and my video card, an NVIDIA Geforce
7900 GT/GTO.
