my desktop background has boxes around the text for each
icon on the desktop that matches the background colour.
So my background picture doesnot come all the way through
where the text for the individual icons are. does anyone
know how to change this so the text for each icon is on
the background picture only

Start/Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings/ Visual
Effects/"Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop"

Also:

Right click the desktop and select Arrange Icons by. Towards the bottom of
that list, uncheck "Lock web items on the desktop."

You can use WinPersonalizer v5.1,it is an integrated tool to customize
your Windows look. This program can change animated
wallpapers,icons,cursors,IE skins,folders,visual styles,OEM
information, transparency of Taskbar,Start button text and put your
name in system tray.
Why waste money and hard disk space downloading third party
applications everytime you want something changed in Windows?
