I have a Dell D600 notebook with the Intel Extreme 64Meg
graphics card. I recently added a Viewsonic N1700W widescreen
monitor. After installing I do not have any of the widescreen modes
available to be selected. I have gone into the advanced properties
and selected VIEW ALL MODES but I only have 4:3 modes available.
Viewsonic support was no help. Couldn't understand a word the guy
said. I am guessing this notebook does not have enough memory to run
in these modes. Can someone confirm this or offer a better solution?

Thanks

64MB is way more than sufficient amount of memory to do this.

Your options are typically these two:

Different video card driver
Different monitor INF file

If the video adapter doesn't support widescreen mode then you may
be out of luck. Since Viewsonic is the company with the less
common feature, you ought to contact them and see if they have a
solution, perhaps a FAQ on their website or on a CD that came
with monitor.
