what does it mean when it says while trying to convert a
drive from fat to ntsf when it say dismount?
and all open handles will be invalid?

another question is in trying to before i will do this, i
did an checkdisk to recover files giving me found file
000.000 , 001.chk etc
can or should i do something like an uncheck or change
these files in anyway first?
this is the most important step to me as this drive is the
one containing 4 years of work i need those files and to
my understanding they are fragments of the files i want to
make them intact, i looked before or i should say analyzed
my disk and if i were to defrag it showed a lot of empty
space yet how could it be when im properties it ssays full
which rightly should be that is where my info is and this
is the purpose for converrting to ntfs from fat to regain
my files any help would be greatly appreciated.
as to what steps to take first and what the meaning is of
the questions i had at the top before i say yes or no?
please and thank you to those who helped yeserday for me
and today in advance.

Hi,

To dismount a volume means for the operating system to have any programs or
processes release all threads pertaining to it. While you may be able to do
this with some while Windows is running, for the one holding the system
partition you cannot. To convert a system partition, simply schedule it to
occur on system reboot. This is done by attempting to convert, and when it
errors out just follow the prompts.

The .chk files are remnants or fragments that the disk checker found. You
can simply ignore or delete these.
