disk write access

Hi,

My virus scanner used to run fine. I changed nothing that I know of, but now
I am told that I cannot automatically delete infected files because the
scanner does not have write access to my HD. What can I do?

If the infected file is in the folders maintained by System Restore, this
is normal. Resolution is to disable System Restore. Restart. Enable System
Restore. You'll be starting over with the collection of restore points but
the infected file will be removed.
 
Well, it turned out to be a mistake on my part. I had changed my virus
scanner from scanning my C drive to scanning My Computer. It then tried to
scan my empty A and D drives, and this is what was causing the problem.

Hmm, wonder why that difference removed write access. This may be a
question that you want to forward to the antivirus program's tech support. I can
understand why the program wouldn't be able to write to drives if they aren't
present but changing a setting shouldn't remove existing privileges for fixed
drives. Just doesn't sound safe or right for that to happen. They may want to fix
that little problem and may not know about it unless they get feedback from
their users.

Anyhow, am glad to hear you have your problem sorted and how you fixed it.
Thanks for letting everyone know. By writing back to the newsgroups with
that information, it may help someone else with the same problem.
