Looking to write over unused disk space, I bought a program from
Stellar
because their support looked good. I've tried it out any number of
times
but it just doesn't work after testing it with a data recovery program.
Has anyone had a similar experience with this? I'm using XP
professional.

Are you doing beta testing for Stellar or trying to find a right solution
for your XP Prof?
For XP Prof, the following might work (for X: drive):

cipher /w:X:

Hi,

I don't know this piece of software, but perhaps you want to try
Eraser. It's free, and works perfect for me.

I wish. No, I paid 40 bucks for it.

Then forget about it (if it doesn't work), and use:
cipher /w:X:
instead.

Well, it seems that my english is not good enough to understand what
you meant by this statement. ;-)

I just tried to help, I didn't want to advertise the software I
mentioned.

That's not really surprizing if you detach such comment from it's context.
Maybe you should try it in the given context and then it may dawn on you.

Maybe I just stumbled upon the resident freak, who thinks he's
superior to everybody else out there. Well, Einstein, why don't you
just dig in your chest of knowledge and help the original poster with
his question?

I got another eraser program from "heidi", and that doesn't work
either. Maybe it's
just the way my system is set up. I have the computer equivalent of a
permanent laundry
marker.

Impossible.

Impossible.

If you wouldn't mind speculating, why wouldn't two different erasing
products
fail to work? I've tried restarting the computer after using the
"erase free space"
option.

No. If data is writen to an area of the disk, then that area is cleared
of any previous data.

Maybe all the rpoducts you tried so far are bogus? Maybe you erased/
deleted some other place than you thought you did? Maybe you erased
only the free space, but the files were still in the trashcan (hence
on non-free space?

Those particular products are notorious for not working properly.

Its not a trivial task and most dont work very well.
