Hi,

We have a Windows 2000 server where in a volume is too much fragmented. When
I try to defragment it, it says "Defragmenter could not initialize".

In Microsoft site, it is specified that this problem is solved in Update
rollup for service pack 4. I have installed the same also, but still problem
persists.

I am not in a position to format the drive as suggested by Microsoft
knowledge base as an alternative, since this volume has critical software
like Veritas backup, antivirus etc. Hence if I format, I will not be able to
copy back the data easily.

Is there any way out?

Install a copy of W2K on another volumne.
Boot this alternat install and use it to backup the fragmented volume.
Format
restore
defrag
boot the normal instance.

This is usually caused from the disk being to full to defragment, run the
disk cleanup wizard, or move the Page file to another drive to see if it
helps.
What is the freespace on the drive?
Don't forget explorer includes the MFT free space when it figures free
space, even though the MFT free space cannot be used for files.

If you can fit it into your budget, I'd recommend purchasing the Raxco Disk
defragmenter, which may be able to recover some of the MFT free space for
use as file storage.
