am preparing to install upgrade of XP on 98. have 7.8 gig
drive with 2.5 gigs free. will I be able to save any disk
space formating NTFS. Will XP leave me with .5 gigs free
upon completion.

No, NTFS will use 4K clusters just like your 7.8GB FAT32
partition.

I can't tell you exactly how much more disk space XP will use
over Windows 98; it depends in part on what choices you make. But
you should have more than .5GB free.

However even if you have 1.5GB free, that's a tiny amount these
days. Be aware that the day will arrive very soon when you'll
have to bite the bullet and buy a larger drive. If it were me, I
would do it now; drives are very cheap and you will probably save
yourself a headache if you do it before it becomes a problem.
