When viewing disk manager, I see a 13.5 G partion that is unformatted and
free. Is is save for me to activate this space for use, and how do I do it? I
tried to format it but format failed.

Is it actually a partition or just a blank area ?
You may have to create a partition on it before you can format it.

Hi,

Free space? Be absolutely sure, as many systems that are preinstalled by the
manufacturer have the recovery information on a separate volume of the hard
drive. The format may be a proprietary image whose format is not natively
recognized by WindowsXP, so it's disk manager would show it as free,
unformatted space. Check your system documentation for details.

Are you sure you quoted the size correctly?

Hard to believe you didn't know it existed.

Yes. Indeed check literature as this may be a special recovery parttion.
What is make and model of computer? So I can look at computer MFG website.

First its a partition with no filesystem type mentioned, then its space,
then you tried to format space.
