according to the microsoft press windows 2000 professional
manual, when performing a network distribution of win2k
pro, the disk partition on the target computer must be
FAT. this doesn't make sense to me. why can't you set
the target partition to NTFS? i saw something in one of
the microsoft articles about specifying convert fat to
ntfs, but why no start with ntfs, if you can (eg., new or
clean install on target computer).

It depends what you mean by a "network distribution".

If you're talking about RIS, then you can use NTFS. If you are hooking up
from DOS to a network share, then you will need to have a formatted
partition before you start and as DOS can only use a FAT partition that's
what you have to use.

See unattended.sourceforge.net for some good information about hooking up to
a network share. Apart from the Microsoft web site, www.labmice.net is a
good resource for RIS.
