"How" are you accessing them? Are you trying to use them as a backend file
to a frontend on your computer? Are you using remote control software?

If you are trying to directly open the database over the RAS (dial-up or
high speed VPN) connection, I don't recommend it. There are too many things
that can interrupt the connection and cause corruption of the database. It
would be better to use remote control or remote desktop software so that the
database is opened by the host computer. Another option, but a lot of work
to set up, would be to use IIS on the host computer and set up web pages to
access the database.

Added: I am using secure remote access to the server
(cisco systems VPN client-encrypted) but I believe the
file is handled by MS access on my computer.

Opening an Access database over a 100 Mb/Sec LAN is noticably faster than a
10 Mb/Sec LAN, trying to open it over a VPN connection probably isn't a very
good idea. If the file gets very large at all, it will be extremely slow.
You also have the problem of corruption that I mentioned earlier. I would
recommend some sort of remote control software on the host computer.
Possible examples are Windows NetMeeting (free), Citrix, PC Anywhere, Go To
My PC, Remote Desktop Management (WinXP, Windows Server 2000 and 2003).
There are others.
