disk space message.Primary partition is 1.46GB and
unallocated is 35.80GB leaving only 81MB of free space.I
suspect I need to access the unallocated partition. How?

I'm almost afraid you have to start over from scratch, unless you are
familiar and comfortable with the use of partitioning software, like
Partition Magic. 1.46GB is really not enoughfor a primary partition
when you are using Windows XP. It's barely enough to run Windows 95.
Besides formatting your "remaining" 35.80GB, you would have to
increase the size of your primary partition to at least 10 GB, to get
any decent use out of it, otherwise you could have just used FDISK to
get access to the larger part of your harddrive. FDISK however doesn't
change partition sizes once they are set.
Backup your documents, e-mails (files ending in .dbx, do a search),
favorites, etc. and start over. It's easier. And don't bother
splitting that 40 GB harddrive into partitions, it's much of a hassle.
Just get a second harddrive if you're concerned about your documents.
