Disk Management Error

I've shrunk the size of my C: drive and now have a second partition. When I
go into Disk Management it recognizes both partitions but I cannot assign a
drive letter to the new partition. When I attempt to do this I the following
error message:

The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is
not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem
persists close the disk Management console, then restart Disk Manangement or
restart the computer.

I have rebooted my machine but it doesn't solve the problem. Has anybody
else experienced this problem and have any ideas how to get round this error?

Mine above error has gone but given me a bigger problem !!!!!!!!!!!!
After recovering the data i deleted that partition and tried expanding
my c drive.But some physical memory error occurred and the laptop
restarted prompting for a recovery (which is in-built in vista) but
after the drive was formatted i canceled the recovery by using power
button(i.e. shutting the lapi) .
Now on starting it says "No disk error". I cheked with some workshop
they said the hard disk is gone !!!! and data cannot be recovered !!!!

Is there any way to recover data from that hard disk ??????????

Please do help if got any solution as that disk has my veryyyyyyyyyyy
important college data ...

I live in India. So if u could suggest some solution it'll be of very
much help..

You have probably messed things up so badly that all your data is
lost.

Hi akanksha--

You probably will be able to recover your OS and all its information since
this is a software error. Follow each of these steps until one works for
you.

If you don't have a Vista DVD from MSFT (not talking about an OEM recovery
DVD), then you can download a Repair Disk with all of Startup Repair's
options from here:

of fixing your system. If you don't have a Vista DVD from which to boot to
Startup Repair, no problem, Download the .iso from the link below and
burn it, and you'll have the Microsoft Vista Repair Disk with Startup
Repair.

commands from the command prompt available on the Statup Repair Menu:

bootrec /rebuild BCD

4) If by rare chance you have an actual Vista DVD, you can put it in, boot
from it>choose the Upgrade Option>choose your current broken Vista Drive and
try to do a repair install with the Vista DVD.

5) If the above 3 tools don't work, then use the 4 tools available by
restarting your pc and tapping F8 once per second to get to the Windows
Advanced Options Menu.

From this menu click on 3 Safe Mode links to use System Restore. Make sure
you try all 3 if one doesn't work, because just one of them may work. Tap F8
to Reach Windows Advanced Options Menu Pictured Below:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command: At the prompt you would type the command to use for
system restore at the safe mode cmd prompt is:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

If these 3 tools don't work, you have one more you can try which is Last
Known Good Configuration.
