On a newly built machine, Win 2k Pro.

Floppy drive often not seeing the disks in the floppy drive. Sometimes
I get a "Please insert a disk into drive A:" message, or --
If it sees the disk, I get a "Disk in Drive A is not formatted"
message.

The drive is brand new, and has been tested in another machine.
The disks are formatted, and can be seen in other machines.

Many thanks for any insights anyone can provide.

The read/write head in that new floppy drive may be slightly out of
alignment. If so, it's not seeing the existing formatted tracks on the
properly formatted diskette. Try formatting a diskette in that drive,
then see if the other machines see the diskette correctly.

If the above is what's wrong, your best option is replacing that brand
new drive. Just to make certain, you might try (if possible) temporarily
replacing that drive with a "known good" drive from one of those other
machines to observe results.

I have a vague memory of a piece of software that could be used for
realignment, maybe from Gibson labs which you can find on the net, but I
wouldn't bet on it. Worth a try though.
