disk formatting

I am looking for a document on one of my floppy disks. When I insert it, it asks me it I want to format it because it has not been formattted. I do not want to erase any documents on it but I need to open the file on the disk. What do I do??
 
Hi Stephanie,

I read an article on the web-site of a major university that may help. They
had a problem with floppies that students had made at home on non XP
machines. Their solution was; Format a floppy on the XP machine, copy the
old floppy on a non XP machine and then transfer the file to the XP
formatted floppy and then use in the XP machine.

They gave details on the reasons but I don't recall them.
