Every time I run chkdsk on startup it runs through tests 1, 2, 3, and begins
test 4, checking file data. CHKDSK gets a few % through the disk and
reboots. I can run this multiple times and I get the same results. Any
suggestions, hints, etc?

Sounds hardwarish.

Are there any hardware errors logged in the system event log ?

start/run
eventvwr.msc

Select system in left hand pane.

Look for any errors to do with memory, disk, or file system, or logical disk
manager.

Any errors flagged with a white cross on a red background.

Have a look and see if the disk in question is still flagged as dirty,,

start/run
cmd

fsutil dirty query C:

Replace C: with the relevant drive if necessary

Visit the disk manufacturers website and get hold of a diagnostic.

What make and model of disk is it, I've got some links to some common
manufacturers diags.

thanks, I went to Maxtor, downloaded their utility, ran it and it repaired
"something". I have not run chkdsk yet. I will probably have time early
next week. Hopefully the Maxtor utlilty fixed it. Thanxxx
