Disk Error Checking... log?

Howdy,

If I examine a disk using Disk | Properties | Tools | Error Checking
does Windows generate a log? If so, where is it to be found?

Does it display the log only if errors are found?

I ask because I just ran a check on an 8 gig external disk. Windows
cranked away for nearly an hour, and then, pffft, nothing. No log, no
summary, no news.

Thanks for the help,

Hi Kenneth,

Look in Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) > Application Log

Type: Information
Source: Winlogon
Event: 1001

Hi Carrie,

Thanks for your suggestion, but I do have a question:

Is there a way for me to clean out that log list?

I took a look, and it has thousands (!) of identical entries
(identical except for time) from Norton AV. Can I clean 'em out?

Thanks again,

Hi again Carrie,

I followed your suggestion, but the log is not there. I just ran the
error-checking for a second time, looked in the location you pointed
me to, but, alas, no log...

Any other thoughts?

Thanks again,

Hi Kenneth,

Q1 - Sent: Friday, August 15, 2003 09:27 AM: "Is there a way for me to clean out that

A1: Yes. Try searching Event Viewer Help for the following topic: "To clear an
event log"

Q2 - Sent: Friday, August 15, 2003 02:03 PM: "no log... Any other thoughts?"

A1: Perhaps clearing out your Application Event Log would help. On my machine,
where I clear the event log approximately every month, my error-checks are logged as
I indicated in my Friday, August 15, 2003 06:32 AM message.

You mean you ran the "Check Now" button and the popup said "Disk
check complete" and then there is no Event Log entry? If so then you
ran a check without "Fix Errors" and/or the disk was clean. Is that
what you mean?

Suggest you check that box for Fix Errors and accept to schedule the
CHKDSK function on reboot. Then reboot.
Now?

Hi again Kenneth,

To add to what Mark V wrote, and if I am interpreting the following Microsoft
Knowledge Base Article KB218461 correctly, from further research it appears that you
will only find an eventvwr.msc > Application Log: Winlogon 1001 event if you schedule
error-checking (chkdsk) to run at boot time against a volume. So...

Perhaps the reason you are not getting a log is because you are performing the
error-checking immediately such as happens when you error-check a partition that has
no open file handles (or you force a volume dismount). For more information, see the
following Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article:

Hi Carrie,

I emptied the log, ran CHKDSK, and no new log was written.

This is no tragedy, but it is confusing...

Thanks for any comments,
