I have 2 physical hard drives. 1 is the main/XP and all my software is
installed on (NTFS) and the other for backup files (FAT32). When I defrag
the backup drive it takes a very long time. Is this fault by design in
WinXP? I read some messages that stated to defrag from safe mode, why is
this?

By using safe mode, programs like Nortons and the like aren't running.

You run into problems trying to defrag while anti-virus progams are
running or a program like Zone Alarm. :-)
