Shelly

Everytime I try to run disk defrag(from
programs/accesories/system tool) it does not work. It
tells me windows can't find dfrg.msg & wants to know what
program created it. If I try and access the defrag.
through my computer/rt click on "C"/properties/tools, it
then tells me it isn't installed, to go to add/remove
windows componets to install it. I have did that several
times, no help. I have windows xp home edition vers.
2002, w/service pack 1. I have had this computer for a
year--last month--and it needs defragmenting! Am I not
supposed to have a disk defrag. It does have the disk
cleanup--and that does work.

Shelly;

It's Dfrg.msc *not* dfrg.msg

Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools |
Right click the Defrag link |

What does the Target show??

It should be:
%windir%\System32\Dfrg.msc
Or
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Dfrg.msc
===============
See if this works for you.

Start | Run | Type: Dfrg.msc | OK

Does that open Disk Defragmenter??

Nope--that did not work--changed the target--still brings
up the box that says windows needs to know the program
that created dfrg.msc. So obviously it still won't
work. I think I just plain have a bad file--and no way
to repair it! Any other suggestions? Thanks for the
help. The target in mine was %SystemRoot%\System32
\dfrg.msc

I just clicked on the "find target" and it brought up
lots of options that relate to the Disk Defragmenter--so
I know it has to be installed, just not sure how to fix
it. The FAT system Module(dfrgfat)/NTFS Module
(dfrgntfs)/Resource Module(dfrgres.dll)/Snap-in Module
(dfrgres.dll) and the UI Module(dfrgui.dll) I don't know
a lot about these things--so any help you can give--I
will try. Thanks alot.

Try this.

START > Run... > %windir%\system32\compmgmt.msc /a

If that opens without error, select Disk Defragmenter in the tree view.
Try defragmenting.

If that works ok. Your dfrg.msc is damaged. To make a new
undamaged copy of dfrg.msc do the following.

If Computer Management is still open, close it.
START > Run... > MMC
File > Add/Remove Snap-in...
Click the Add... button.
Select Disk Defragmenter; click Add; click Close, click OK.
Do not select Disk Defragmenter in the tree view.
Select Disk Defragmenter in the right hand pane.
Action > New Window from here
Close the original Console Root window.
Maximise the Console1 - [Disk Defragmenter] window.
File > Save As... > %windir%\system32\dfrg.msc

If that's too much, just copy dfrg.msc from another Windows XP machine.
