Whenever I try to open disk defragmenter in command prompt I get an error
message which states the following"Windows cannot connect to the Disk
Defragmenter engine." When I open disk defragmentor from Start>All
Programs>Accessories>System Tools and click on defragment then nothing
happens.I'm using Windows XP Professional Version 5.1.2600 Service pack 2
Build 2600.

Open a run command and type in these DLLs:
regsvr32 dfragsna.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll click [OK]
Open the Windows explorer and locate this path:
C:\Windows\Inf =
in the right Pane/window locate this file dfrg.inf right click on it and
select install and reboot your computer then try to run Defragment.
How do you manage your memory, do you set a size or let windows manage for
you?.
HTH.

Nothing happens when clicking on Defragment or Analyze in Disk Defragmenter
(dfrg.msc).

With XP SP2 the DCOM Server Process Launcher service needs to be running for
Defrag to work.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click DCOM Server Process Launcher |
Set the startup type to Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | When the service starts, click OK |
Close Services | Reboot

<quote>
Note the following things will fail if this service is not running:
The builtin defrag will fail to work, and if running defrag from the command
line one gets this error:
Windows cannot connect to the Disk Defragmenter engine

from...
DCOM Server Process Launcher
