Hey:

I'm confused about Vista's defrag program. I know it is recommended to run
on a schedule which makes me wonder. Can I be using the computer during the
operation? I'm sure the computer has to be on to run defrag but does it need
to be awake?

Thanks all,
Ed

It must be awake. It runs in the background, even if you are using the
computer.

If the computer is off at the scheduled time the task will begin 30 minutes
after you next turn on the computer. Is a background task and you can use
your computer freely during that time.

But it's a real PITA if you have multiple drives each with multiple
partitions because you have to run it from the command line to keep it
from doing the whole damned mess.

Auslogic's is much better in that regard.

The BEST is Diskeeper. But it ain't free.

That all said: I let Vista keep my system drive defragged and use
Auslogic's to do all the others when I'm in the mood to play "techie".

And I might just get a wild hair one of these days and pop for
Diskeeper, just for da halibut.

What does the pay one do to make it worth it?

It defrags EVERYTHING in the background with NO discernible hit on
your use of your system.

It will defrag a disk/partition that has less than the "required" 15%
of free space.

It can reorganize/optimize disks and partitions per your settings.

It is infinitely customizable.

It's amazing.

So let JKD do all drives - especially if their a mess. Intelligent. Uses few
resources. Free. Screensaver option's cool too. Auslogic's pretty and I use
it on some machines for fun. Like their Registry Defrag too. Just sayin'
