disk defrag

when I try to run defrag on my HP zd7058cl, I get a message that I have to ru n scan disk before the drive can be defraged.. problem is that I do not have scan disk on the computer and have not been able to find it... I thought scandisk was a windows 95 program but my xp is asking for it...
how can I get defrag to run without running scandisk??
