My XP user account boots very slowly. I thought I would use the defrag to clean up some stuff. It does not work !! Cont/ alt/ delete shows the program not resonding. Shutdown & restarted many times, no luck, the problem still persists. Please help. THanks in advance

Hi,

HOW TO: Analyze and Defragment a Disk in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305781&Product=winxp

Check the hard drive for errors, going to start > Run and typing
chkdsk /R
This will repair the errors when you next boot, it may take awhile,
though.

You can also download Bootvis from Microsoft. Bootvis is a Boot
performance trace visualization tool for use with Windows XP systems.
It gives a graphical view of what processes are doing what and when
during boot and allow you to optimize your boot up. After you've done
your troubleshooting, remember to turn off tracing.

Good luck

We had problems with defrag as well, except that we would get an error that the defrag engine was lost. Used software - Diskeeper, which allows to clean pagefiles as well. Turned out our C drive was crititcal, maybe that's why it woudn't work.
