Are there any data recovery forums? I have found one at
hddgurus.com, but that seems more hardware oriented,
people wanting donor parts or firmware to resurrect zapped
drives etc. Or else "my drive is making weird noises!"
I am more interested in corrupt filesystems, such as a
virus screwing a MBR, FAT, MFT, rootdir...

This one covers that subject.

Thats often the reason people want to do data recovery when they dont have full backups.

Those do get covered here.

The HDD Guru forums do answer questions regarding file system
corruption, but they only offer general advice, such as which software
to throw at the problem. Apart from a few individuals, I have found
them to be a selfish, arrogant bunch who use the forum as a referral
service, or a fishing pond for hapless clients.

You can try your luck here. Resulst in the past have ranged
from excellent advice to discussions drifting in unrelated
directions and no useful advice at all. For a virus, you can
also try the various AV vendor advisory sites or if it has
a CVE, you can try that.

Hard drive failure is a surprisingly common problem, and one that can put your data at great risk. But, retrieving that data is often not as difficult as the situation may seem. The basic fact is that 99% of data is recoverable and that hard drive recovery is almost always possible, as long as you take the right course of action. Contacting a professional data recovery engineer for a free consultation is a good start.

If you have formatted your hard drive and lost entire data then you don't need to worry because you can easily perform recovery with the help of effective third-party. The software safely restore data to specified location within few clicks.
