In disk cleanup, I have a lot of space that can be retrieved by compressing
old files. What are the good/bad points of compressing files. I do it all
the time in OE, but was told it wasn't a good idea to do it in IE. I have
asked this question three times before and never got a good answer. Always,
either don't do it if you don't need the space. Or never do it. Or go ahead
and do it. But no one ever explains why I should, or shouldn't do it.

Appreciate any insight.

TIA

Using compression always has risk, like something happens to the un
compressor, or just a windows fart. I would not touch it.

I compress all the time. It does no harm, saves space, speeds up the system
etc. If a problem occurs (I never had one) the problem should be fixed instead
of avoiding compression. The primary reason for compression is space saving.

This is simply a means of providing additional disk (storage) space by
compressing files which are rarely accessed. I frankly see no good
reason not to do it just as I see no good reason not to delete the stuff
in My Documents which you never access and have forgotten why you kept
it. Yes you may have some problems (in my experience, rarely) in
decompressing/re-opening compressed files just as you do in any other
software you can name [the world and software ain't perfect]. DO NOT
compress operating system files or anything listed as a Program nor
anything frequently accessed. There are a variety of compression
programs for sale which I have no experience/comment. I stay with what
is built into XP. I am no expert so do what you decide.
