is there a list or link to a list of files that are safe
to delete ?

After a clean install and updates from the update site,
my installation is taking over 2 gigs of space.

No, not to my knowledge. And I strongly discourage this practice. Over the
years we have seen enormous problems created by users primarily from two
things: (1) looking for files to delete to free space and (2) looing for
Registry keys they can manually delete. I advise against both.

You have an extremely tight, compact installation. I recommend no less than
3 GB for a Win XP install, and preferably 5 GB of space just for Windows and
its necessary elements if you are doing an upgrade.

If you don't use hibernation, you can disable it in Control Panel's power
options, and this will free up an amount of space equal to the amount of RAM
you have.
