Disk Cleanup

I'm running windows xp and for some reason or other my
disk cleanup has stopped working, when you start it up it
gets stuck in calculating...compress old files, and it
stays there for as long as i can leave it there, one time
i left for the weekend and when i got back it was still
there. Can anyone help.

A description on the fix is available.Any utility or
program,not running or fixing itself in 5-10 mins.
should probably be terminated,running for hrs. or
days isn't the best of practices.
