When you run disk cleanup, you get the option to compress
old files...I never do that, but noticed that from time
to time the amount is reduced anyways...
Does windows compress the old files automatically?
Is there a setting where I could stop that?

When you run the Disk Cleanup utility, the program may stop responding
(hang) while scanning for compressed files.

CAUSE
This issue occurs when there is an incorrect entry in the registry that is
used by the Disk Cleanup utility to locate compressed files..

There is no incorrect registry entry. And certainly the KB doesn't say what it is or offer a fix if there is indeed one.

First it requires no registry entries (apart from the clsid under VolumeCaches and standard com settings - icon and server). Disk Cleanup stores if things are selected or not, the order it is run in. But it will run in the absense of these values. After setup it has the clsid as the default value and a priority key which sets in what order it called

Therefore it needs no settings whatsoever to work. In experimentation with those who have the problem removing all settings doen't make any difference.

Disk clean up does not hang and works OK.
Just was wondering why the amount of old files
in 'compress old files' are reduced a lot from time to
time.
I've noticed, I 've had about 600MB of uncompressed old
files and all of a sudden it's only 10MB or so. I didn't
ask for compressing and never check that box 'cause I have
enough hard drive space.
So why do they get compressed anyways?
