Hi Peter :-)

browser. It isn't doing it. Tried unchecking it, restarting and
resetting... it doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas why? I know I can
do it manually.

Just a thought, but, you might also try the following and see if it helps:
Tools>Internet Options>General>Under History: Days to keep pages in History,
set to zero (0)

Also,
Tools>Internet Options>General>Under Temporary Internet
Files>Settings>Amount of disk space to use: Set the slider for the space
allocated for your TIF's at the lowest possible point, usually to the far
left of the slider.

or.....

Clearing Autocomplete

Try the following and see it it helps.

Disable Autocomplete

Tools>Internet Options>Content tab>click Autocomplete
Uncheck all the boxes for features you don't want to use
Click Apply
Then OK

Or, if still no joy.............

First thing is when you "clear history", you need to close all your browser
windows that are opened. Otherwise it retains the autocomplete for web
address until you do so. Then reopen Internet Explorer and you should find
that it no longer performs the autocomplete.

To prevent it from happening, go to Tools|Internet Options and click the
Content tab. Click the button that says Autocomplete. Uncheck Web Addresses
and anything else that you don't want to use autocomplete for. You may want
to clear your "forms" and "passwords" if you feel it's necessary. Just a
word of advice, make sure you know what your passwords are before you clear
that one.

Clearing Address Suggestions in IE - Per Jim Byrd

To delete ALL Addresses in the Drop Down list, go here and download
and install Mike Burgess' DelTypedURL.inf at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm See below for Selective Delete.

You can also get DelSearchMRU.inf at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelSearchMRU.inf

Note: this does not remove entries entered via AutoComplete. To remove
hidden AutoComplete entries in History:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm#AutoComplete

IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure that ALL instances of IE6 are CLOSED before you do
the install of this(these) .inf files.

A nice alternative just for selective or all Address (not Search) history
maintenance is EditURLs, here:
http://www.aandrc.com/editurls/
Here also, you must close ALL instances of IE6 for the deletions to "take".

Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm
Deletes the History folder (and the index.dat file). When you reboot, a new
folder is created

Delete History folder manually:

In order to prevent the Autocomplete from working, close all open browser
windows or it will not take effect. Go to Tools | Internet Options | Click
the Content tab. Click the button that says Autocomplete. Uncheck Web
Addresses and all other items you don't want used with Autocomplete.
CAUTION: Be careful clearing passwords, be sure you have them backedup

Courtesy of LuckyStrike:

Do a Deltree command in DOS:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Follow the instructions to the letter. You will be left with new Index.dat
file of 32 KB, and a newly created History folder. The same will apply if
you go the distance and do a Deltree on TIF and Cookie folders. It is
unnecessary to do that if they are in good working order.

delete the History folder to eliminate entries which are currently stored in
the index.dat file.

or
IE Address Bar Editor will clear selected entries.:

Tip: If you type URLs in via File> Open, instead of the address bar, they
aren't saved in the TypedURLs key and you can keep a select few URLs in the
drop-down list.

Thanks Jan Il, I had those set to 1 day and 40mb, so have reset as per your
suggestion and will see how that works. The strange thing is that it was
emptying up 'til yesterday whenever I exited IE...I guess I'll never know
why!!

One thing that came to mind was that you might have a corrupted History
folder, which can cause such a problem, and which I think may be addressed
with these two articles of information I also provided. If you haven't
already done so, you might try them and see if they help to restore the
normal settings for your History maintenance.

Another factor that can often cause such problems to suddenly crop up is
some form of scumware on your system. Although you may have run scans with
your AV, AdAware or SpyBot, there are other types of scumware and malware
that can also affect the History. You should also try the following and see
if it helps:

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
Also be sure to use the About:Buster here

AdAware se (Free)

and the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the SpywareInfo or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30, to allow the experts there to
evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WinsockFix Utility

or
WinsockXPFix available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and

http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm
also
From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-

also ....
(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)
