disk cleanup locks up system & creates serious error, help

Im not sure why, but as of last week my machine will not
let me do a disk cleanup. it locks up and when i close
out the disk cleanup box, everything runs slow. then i
reboot and i get a Computer has recovered from a serious
error message. Any ideas anyone?
