Disk cleanup errors

After running disk cleanup and after calculating how much
disk space will be saved and then continuing to go ahead
and erase selected items, disk cleanup stops running and
gives text but no error message:

Windows is terminating Disk Cleanup due to errors. The
program must be restarted.

This happens both with the run cmd and selecting from
system tools.

Any suggestions. Running Win2000 pro.
