I ran disk cleanup on my computer today and I checked the box for compression
of files. Before it completed, the computer rebooted. I can't restart my
computer, because everytime the thing reboots, I get an error message that
says that windows didn't shut down successfully, I have a number of options
for rebooting (safe mode, use last successful configuration, let it start
normally, etc.). However, none of the options are successful, because
whatever option I choose it reboots into the same continuous loop. How do I
solve this problem? Thanks in advance.

Try Repair/install windows:

Please post a copy of the Stop Error Report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

What changes were made to hardware / software prior to running Disk
CleanUp?

What is your position regarding a Windows XP CD? Does the CD include
SP2?

What is the computer make and model?

One of the suggestions in the first link is to run chkdsk but if you try
this be warned you can cause further file corruption as well as solve
the problem. If you have important data files you need to back these up
first. This can often be done by placing the hard drive in a second
computer as a slave there obviating the need to boot from the
problematic drive.

I can't open windows, nor can I even access the command prompt. I am in this
loop that I can't break. The computer restarts, tells me it didn't shut down
correctly, gives me options to select for the reboot, then restarts over
again.

I made no hardware changes prior to running disk cleanup.

I do have the Windows XP CD, but it doesn't have SP2 on it.

Access the BIOS and check that the Boot Sequence has the CD drive before
the hard drive. If it has the hard drive first change it so that the CD
drive is first.

Then use your Windows XP CD to install the Recovery Console.

If you cannot start the system due to the error, use the Recovery
Console and run Chkdsk /r.
