Disk Cleaner Hangs

When I start the disk cleaner and the screen "calculating
the amount of free space" starts, it stops at "compress
old files" and will not go beyond that point ! A secondary
problem exists with "My Computer" access....when I open
this folder instead of the drives being listed, files such
as my scanner file and 2 document files are listed. I
think I may have some corrupt system files ! Do you have
any ideas/advice on how to correct these issues ?? Thank
you.
 
Run chkdsk to try to fix possible corruptions

Go to the command prompt

start/all programs/accessories/command prompt

and run the command

chkdsk /F C:

Replace C: if necessary with the drive containing windows xp

You should get a message that it cant run straight away because system files
are in use, so confirm you want to run it when the system restarts, then
reboot,

When you run the Disk Cleanup utility, the program may stop responding
(hang) while scanning for compressed files.

CAUSE
This issue occurs when there is an incorrect entry in the registry that is
used by the Disk Cleanup utility to locate compressed files..
